About this project:
In the US, a tremendous number of teachers don’t get the funding they need to set their classrooms up for success. Most will end up paying out of their own pockets to buy educational materials, which feels all wrong and makes me sad. Many make wishlists to ask for help purchasing what they cannot. For the last four summers, I’ve asked teachers to send me lists of what their classrooms need so I could share it widely across the Smitten Kitchen community because I know how good it feels to be able to buy kids crayons and books for schools where it really makes a difference. I’ve been thrilled and overwhelmed by the level of generosity and enthusiasm from this community — we cleared so many lists the last four summers and my inbox was full with photos of happy classrooms and thank you notes all fall. It’s 2026: Let’s do it again.

Help out if you feel you’re able — you will unquestionably make a teacher’s (and their students’) day. If you’re daunted about where to start, I recommend picking a school in your area, or perhaps where you grew up, or search the descriptions for classrooms that might focus on something near and dear to you. There is no purchase too small. Plus, buying crayons, pencils, and books that help kids learn and succeed feels really good. Thank you!
